Grape cane gall maker

Ampeloglypter sesostris

Description

The grape cane gall maker (Ampeloglypter sesostris) is a destructive pest of grapevines, belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This beetle is recognized by its characteristic impact on the physical structure of the vine, often leading to significant stress and localized damage in vineyards across various geographical regions.

This pest primarily infests the green stems, leaf petioles, and young shoots of Vitis species. By feeding on and laying eggs within the cane tissues, the insect interrupts the normal development of the plant. The impact is most noticeable during the active growing season, when the plant is putting the most energy into shoot elongation and leaf production.

The biological cycle of Ampeloglypter sesostris consists of several stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults typically overwinter in protected sites near the vines. As the temperature rises in spring, they emerge to feed. The female cuts into the stem to deposit an egg, which triggers the plant's response: the formation of a gall, providing both shelter and food for the developing larva.

The damage caused by this insect is twofold. First, the physical boring by the larva weakens the canes, making them susceptible to wind breakage. Second, the gall formation disrupts the translocation of nutrients and water within the affected shoot, often causing the terminal growth to wither or die back prematurely, which significantly reduces the vine's photosynthetic capacity.

Effective management and control measures for this pest involve:

  • Manual removal and destruction of infested canes showing signs of gall formation.
  • Proper disposal of vine prunings to prevent adults from seeking shelter near the vineyard.
  • Timely application of systemic or contact insecticides during the adult emergence phase.
  • Maintaining healthy vines through balanced fertilization to ensure they can recover from minor infestations.
