Summer chafer

Systematic position: The summer chafer (Amphimallon aequinoctialis) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. It is a well-known agricultural pest that shares similar biological traits with other common cockchafers but possesses distinct environmental requirements for its development.

Affected crops: The larvae are polyphagous and cause significant damage to the root systems of various agricultural plants. They are particularly destructive to cereal crops, corn, potatoes, sugar beets, and young nursery stock. The presence of larvae in the soil can be detrimental to both field crops and horticultural plantations.

Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle is completed primarily within the soil and spans multiple years. After the mating flight of adults, females lay eggs in the soil. The larvae go through several instars, feeding voraciously on roots. The developmental speed depends on soil temperature and moisture levels, with pupation occurring in a specialized earthen cell before the adult emerges.

Damage and economic significance: The larvae are the most harmful stage, as they sever or prune root systems, preventing plants from absorbing water and nutrients. Infested fields typically show stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and eventually total crop loss in patches. Severe infestations lead to significant yield reductions, especially during dry years when plants cannot compensate for root damage.

Control measures: Management of the summer chafer requires a combination of strategies. Important steps include:

• deep autumn plowing to bring larvae to the surface;
• monitoring soil pest populations before planting;
• application of appropriate soil insecticides during sowing;
• using systemic seed treatments to protect young plants during the initial growth stages.
