Summer chafer

The summer chafer (scientific name Amphimallon marginipes) is a significant soil-dwelling pest belonging to the family Scarabaeidae within the order Coleoptera. This species is widely recognized in agriculture for its damaging larval stage, which thrives in the soil and targets the root systems of various plants, posing a persistent threat to yield stability.

The pest has a broad host range, causing damage to cereal crops, vegetables, sugar beets, and young saplings in tree nurseries. Because the larvae remain underground for several years, they can cause long-term cumulative damage to crops in a field, making them particularly difficult to manage without systematic monitoring.

The life cycle of Amphimallon marginipes is typically multi-year. After egg-laying, the larvae hatch and start feeding on organic matter and roots. They undergo several instars, moving deeper into the soil during cold seasons and surfacing when temperatures rise to resume feeding. The adult beetles are generally less harmful than the subterranean larvae, though they can damage leaves of various shrubs and trees.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by root pruning, which compromises the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients. This leads to yellowing, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the complete collapse of the plant. Such damage is often most visible in young crops or during periods of drought, when plants lack the reserve capacity to overcome root loss.
