Description
Systematic position. The goose louse (Anaticola anseris) belongs to the order Phthiraptera and the family Philopteridae. It is a highly specialized ectoparasite that spends its entire life cycle on the host, primarily infesting domestic and wild geese.
Host range and damage. While not a threat to crops, this organism is a major pest in the poultry industry. It feeds on feather barbs, down, and skin debris. Heavy infestations can lead to significant physiological stress in the flock, directly impacting the profitability of goose farming operations.
Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages, occurring entirely on the bird. Eggs are attached to the feather barbules, where they hatch into nymphs. The entire development process is temperature-dependent and is completed within a few weeks, allowing for rapid population growth under favorable conditions.
Nature of damage and pest significance. Infested geese experience intense itching, causing them to bite and pull out their own feathers. This behavior results in skin damage, feather loss, and decreased body condition. Furthermore, chronic stress leads to reduced egg production and increased susceptibility to other diseases.
Protection measures. Effective control requires a combination of chemical treatment and rigorous hygiene management.
