Turkey louse
Chelopistes meleagridis
Description
The Chelopistes meleagridis, commonly known as the turkey louse, is an ectoparasite belonging to the order Mallophaga and the family Philopteridae. This species specifically targets turkeys and is considered a significant pest in both commercial poultry farms and small-scale backyard setups, impacting overall flock welfare.
The biology of this parasite is entirely dependent on the host. The life cycle consists of eggs (nits), several nymphal stages, and the adult phase, all of which occur on the bird's feathers or skin. A female louse cements her eggs to the barbs of the feathers, primarily around the neck, head, and breast areas. Development is rapid in warm, humid conditions, allowing for exponential population growth.
These lice feed on the host's feathers, skin dander, and occasionally skin secretions. The damage is primarily caused by the persistent irritation and itching, which leads to intense self-preening and pecking. Severely infested birds exhibit frayed feathers, skin lesions, restlessness, and significant weight loss. In extreme cases, young poults may suffer from anemia or become susceptible to secondary diseases.
Transmission occurs through direct contact between birds or via contaminated housing and equipment. Because these parasites cannot survive long away from a host, they spread most rapidly in high-density conditions where birds are in close proximity. Identifying the lice is simple by parting the feathers, as they appear as small, brownish, crawling insects near the base of the plumage.
Effective management requires a combination of chemical control and environmental hygiene. Utilizing veterinarian-approved insecticides, such as specialized dusts or sprays, is essential for eliminating existing infestations.
- Maintain optimal sanitation in poultry houses.
- Provide regular dust bathing areas for the birds.
- Quarantine new birds before introducing them to the flock.
- Monitor the flock periodically for signs of infestation.
