Columbicola is a genus of lice within the order Phthiraptera, commonly known as pigeon lice. Specifically, Columbicola columbae is a specialized ectoparasite that spends its entire life cycle on the body of a pigeon. These insects are classified within the family Degeeriellidae and are significant pests in pigeon keeping, affecting both racing and ornamental breeds.
The biology of these lice is characterized by a permanent parasitic lifestyle. Adult lice feed on the barbs of the feathers and the bird's skin debris. Eggs are laid directly on the shafts of the feathers, glued securely in place. The nymphs undergo several molts before reaching adulthood, all while remaining on the host.
