Pigeon louse

The pigeon louse (Columbicola columbae) is an obligate ectoparasite belonging to the order Phthiraptera and the family Philopteridae. These small, elongated insects are host-specific, residing almost exclusively on the plumage of pigeons. They spend their entire life cycle on the host, feeding on feather barbs, down, and skin debris.

This parasite is a significant concern for pigeon keepers and bird breeders. While it does not impact commercial crop production directly, it is considered a major pest in ornithological facilities, negatively affecting the physical condition of the birds and reducing the value of breeding stocks due to damaged plumage.

The biology of Columbicola columbae is characterized by gradual metamorphosis. Eggs are firmly attached to the barbs of flight and tail feathers. After hatching, nymphs undergo several molts before reaching maturity. The entire development process is highly dependent on the microclimate maintained by the bird's body heat, making these parasites perfectly adapted to their environment.

The primary damage caused by these lice is the structural destruction of feathers, creating a ragged appearance on the wings and tail. Infested birds experience intense irritation, leading to restlessness, persistent preening, and self-mutilation. Severe infestations can cause significant feather loss, dermatitis, and systemic exhaustion, which lowers the bird's overall resistance to avian diseases.

Effective management strategies for controlling pigeon lice include:
