Ancylus

Ancylus is a genus of freshwater gastropod mollusks belonging to the family Planorbidae. While often considered a natural component of aquatic ecosystems, in agricultural settings such as hydroponic systems or aquatic nurseries, they can become pests, feeding on root systems and delicate submerged plant tissues.

Systematically, this genus belongs to the order Hygrophila. They are easily recognized by their cap-shaped, cone-like shells, which differ significantly from the more common coiled shells of other Planorbidae. These mollusks thrive on submerged surfaces, feeding primarily on periphyton and organic detritus.

The life cycle of Ancylus involves laying eggs on stable substrates, including plant stems, stones, or equipment surfaces. As hermaphrodites, they can rapidly establish populations in environments with abundant nutrients. Their ability to survive minor fluctuations in water conditions makes them persistent in greenhouse environments.

Damage to plants is primarily mechanical. By rasping the epidermal layers of roots and seedlings, Ancylus weakens the plant structure. These mechanical injuries create entry points for secondary infections, including fungal rots and bacterial diseases, which can lead to significant crop loss in susceptible plant varieties.

Management and control strategies include:

• Implementing fine-mesh filtration to prevent the introduction of eggs.
• Regular cleaning of irrigation lines and hydroponic reservoirs.
• Reducing the concentration of algae and organic matter to limit food sources.
• Employing biological control measures or specialized molluscicides where permitted.

Effective management relies on maintaining strict sanitation protocols within the greenhouse facility. By monitoring for the presence of adult snails and ensuring the water supply is treated or filtered, growers can prevent Ancylus populations from reaching levels that damage crop productivity.
