Biomphalaria pfeifferi is a freshwater snail belonging to the Planorbidae family, order Basommatophora. While primarily recognized in medical literature as an intermediate host for parasitic trematodes, its role in agricultural settings, particularly in greenhouse hydroponics and aquaponics, is that of a nuisance pest that disrupts production systems.

This species poses a significant threat to various aquatic and hydroponic crops. The snails feed on root systems, tender stem tissues, and algae mats that develop on grow beds. Their presence is often detected when plant growth slows down significantly due to the mechanical destruction of vital water-absorbing roots.

The biology of Biomphalaria pfeifferi is highly adapted to static or slow-moving water environments. They exhibit rapid reproductive cycles, laying eggs on submerged surfaces, including plant roots and irrigation equipment. This ability allows them to establish massive colonies in nutrient-rich hydroponic solutions in a very short amount of time.

The damage caused by these molluscs is twofold: direct feeding damage and indirect biological contamination. By consuming plant tissues, they stress the plants and create necrotic wounds that favor the onset of rot and bacterial diseases. Furthermore, the accumulation of their excrement can significantly alter the chemical parameters of the nutrient solution.

Effective management strategies focus on prevention and physical exclusion. Essential measures include:

  • Installing fine mesh filters to block egg transmission.
