The river limpet (Ancylus fluviatilis) is a small freshwater mollusk belonging to the family Ancylidae. Unlike most gastropods, it possesses a cap-shaped shell lacking a distinct spiral. This evolutionary adaptation enables the mollusk to adhere tightly to submerged rocks and artificial structures, preventing it from being washed away by strong water currents.

In an agronomic context, the river limpet is categorized as a nuisance species rather than a direct crop pest. Its presence is highly significant in agricultural water management, specifically regarding the maintenance of irrigation channels, drainage networks, and water reservoirs. It thrives in oxygen-rich environments with stable substrate surfaces.

The life cycle of Ancylus fluviatilis is characterized by high reproductive rates during the warm season. Being simultaneous hermaphrodites, they can colonize new habitats rapidly. They lay small egg masses on hard surfaces, which hatch into juveniles that immediately begin feeding on biofilms and algae covering the submerged structures.

The main agricultural concern is biofouling. When colonies reach high densities, they impede the flow of water through pipes, clog irrigation filters, and affect the efficiency of water intake systems for field irrigation. Additionally, in aquaculture settings, they can compete with juvenile fish for food resources and serve as vectors for certain aquatic parasites.

Strategies for managing river limpet populations in agricultural systems include the following:

• Mechanical scraping and removal of biofouling from water-carrying infrastructure.
• Implementation of backwashing cycles for irrigation filter systems.
• Chemical water treatments where permissible, specifically targeting pH or ionic concentrations that inhibit mollusk shell formation.
