Recognized as a significant aquatic organism, this snail is commonly found in tropical and subtropical freshwater habitats, including canals, ditches, and stagnant water bodies associated with agricultural irrigation systems. It is well-adapted to environments rich in aquatic vegetation.

The biology of Biomphalaria alexandrina is characterized by rapid reproductive rates and hermaphroditic reproduction, allowing populations to thrive in stable, slow-moving or stagnant waters. These snails feed primarily on algae, periphyton, and decaying plant material, which makes them highly efficient at colonizing new water bodies where organic resources are abundant.

The life cycle involves egg deposition on submerged surfaces, followed by a rapid progression through juvenile stages to sexual maturity. Favorable temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C significantly accelerate their growth and reproduction, often leading to massive population outbreaks in irrigation networks that provide both shelter and food.

While they are not typically direct herbivores of crops, their impact on agriculture is significant due to the clogging of irrigation infrastructure and the degradation of water quality. Their excessive presence can lead to operational challenges in hydraulic systems and creates ecological imbalances. Furthermore, they are well-known vectors for various trematodes, posing risks to public health and the safety of agricultural workers.
