Andaspis
Andaspis
Description
Andaspis is a genus of insects belonging to the family Diaspididae (armored scale insects) within the order Hemiptera. These specialized sap-sucking pests are characterized by the production of a hard, protective covering (the scale) that shields them from predators, environmental stressors, and many contact pesticides, making them difficult to manage.
The host range of Andaspis primarily includes citrus trees and a variety of tropical or subtropical ornamental plants. They are frequently found in nurseries, orchards, and greenhouses, where the stable microclimate promotes rapid reproduction and subsequent spread across plant foliage and woody tissues.
The biology of the pest revolves around its sedentary lifestyle after the crawler stage. Adult females remain fixed under their protective armor throughout their reproductive life, depositing eggs beneath the scale. Newly hatched nymphs, known as crawlers, are the only mobile stage; they actively disperse to find suitable feeding sites, where they eventually insert their mouthparts and begin secreting their protective wax.
Infestation damage manifests as weakened plant vigor, yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), and significant twig dieback. As the scale insects extract nutrients, the plant loses vitality, leading to distorted growth, stunted development, and reduced yield. In severe cases, high population densities can cause significant structural damage and the eventual death of the affected plant host.
Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for controlling Andaspis are essential for effective reduction of infestation levels:
- Regular scouting and monitoring to identify early signs of scale presence.
- Mechanical removal or pruning of heavily infested branches and shoots.
- Application of systemic insecticides that target the insect's internal physiological processes.
- Utilization of horticultural oils or soaps to suffocate the insects by blocking their spiracles.
- Implementation of strict quarantine protocols for incoming plant material to prevent the introduction of new colonies.
