Pomegranate scale
Andaspis punicae
Description
The pomegranate scale (Andaspis punicae) is a destructive pest belonging to the family Diaspididae within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a serious economic pest in pomegranate-growing regions, where it poses a significant threat to tree health and fruit productivity by colonizing bark, leaves, and fruits.
This insect primarily attacks Punica granatum (pomegranate trees). Due to their cryptic nature and small size, the scales are often dispersed through infested nursery stock, making it difficult to prevent their introduction into new geographic areas without strict quarantine protocols.
The biology of Andaspis punicae is defined by its sessile life stage; adult females remain stationary under a protective waxy covering (scale). The life cycle involves the hatching of nymphs, known as crawlers, which are the only mobile stage. These crawlers migrate to new feeding sites before settling and developing their permanent protective armor.
The damage caused by these insects is severe and progressive. By extracting sap from the host plant, they induce chlorosis, leaf drop, and stunted growth. Prolonged infestations weaken the tree significantly, leading to canopy dieback and reduced fruit quality. The presence of the scales also leaves the plant more susceptible to opportunistic fungal infections and can lead to eventual tree death if not managed.
Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for controlling Andaspis punicae include:
- Rigorous inspection and quarantine of all imported plant material to prevent entry.
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local pest density.
- Applying systemic insecticides specifically timed to target the vulnerable crawler stage.
- Using horticultural oils to smother overwintering populations.
- Promoting biological control through the conservation of natural predators and parasitoids in the orchard.
