Description
The Shot hole borer (Anisandrus dispar) is a destructive wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. It is widely recognized as a serious pest in both temperate fruit orchards and various forest habitats, known for its ability to excavate tunnels deep into the heartwood of trees.
This species has a broad host range, primarily attacking fruit trees such as apple, pear, cherry, and plum. It often targets stressed, diseased, or weakened trees, although healthy trees are not entirely immune to infestation if the population density of the beetle is sufficiently high in the surrounding area.
The beetle's life cycle is complex. Females overwinter in tunnels within the wood and emerge in spring when temperatures become favorable. Unlike many other bark beetles, Anisandrus dispar is an ambrosia beetle, meaning it introduces symbiotic fungi into its galleries, which serve as the primary food source for its developing larvae.
The damage caused by the shot hole borer is distinct. Small, perfectly round entry holes, roughly 2 mm in diameter, appear on the bark surface. These tunnels disrupt the tree's vascular system, causing branch dieback, wilting of foliage, and reduced yields. If the infestation is severe, the structural integrity of the wood is compromised, leading to tree mortality.
Management strategies focus on preventive measures and chemical intervention. Culturally, it is essential to prune and destroy heavily infested limbs to reduce the local pest population. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization is crucial, as healthy trees produce resins that can repel beetles. During peak flight periods, targeted insecticide applications may be necessary to protect high-value crops.
