Systematic position: Anisandrus obesus is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is recognized as a type of ambrosia beetle. Unlike wood-boring insects that feed directly on tree tissues, this beetle establishes a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi, which serve as the primary food source for its larvae.

Host plants: The pest is a polyphagous insect that infests a wide range of deciduous trees. Common hosts include various species of oak, beech, maple, and linden. Fruit trees may also be susceptible when they are under environmental stress, such as drought or mechanical damage, which makes them highly attractive to colonizing beetles.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is characterized by the beetle's habit of boring into the sapwood to create gallery systems. After entering the tree, the female introduces fungal spores into the tunnels. The resulting fungal growth supports the development of the larvae. Adults and larvae remain within these galleries, where the fungi provide essential nutrients required for the beetle's life cycle.

The presence of the pest is often indicated by sawdust around entrance holes and darkened streaks within the wood.
