Say's bark beetle

Systematic position. Say's bark beetle (Anisandrus sayi) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. As an ambrosia beetle, it does not consume wood directly; instead, it establishes a specialized symbiotic relationship with fungi, which it carries to the host tree to serve as food for its offspring.

Host plants. This species primarily attacks a variety of deciduous trees, including oak, maple, beech, and hornbeam. It is also known to infest fruit-bearing trees such as apples and peaches. It typically targets trees that are already stressed due to environmental factors, drought, or prior mechanical injury, though healthy trees can sometimes be overwhelmed by high population pressures.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins when a female bores a gallery into the sapwood of a tree and introduces specific Ambrosiella fungi. The eggs are laid within these tunnels, and the emerging larvae feed exclusively on the fungal mycelium growing on the gallery walls. This symbiotic interaction is crucial for the beetle's survival and population growth within the host.

Damage and economic impact. The primary damage is caused by the construction of deep galleries that disrupt the vascular tissue of the tree. The associated fungal infection causes staining of the wood and can lead to branch dieback or total tree mortality. In orchards, this impact can lead to significant yield losses and the decline of mature trees, making it a serious concern for growers.

Control measures. Managing Anisandrus sayi is difficult because the insects spend most of their life cycle protected deep within the wood. Control strategies should focus on:

• Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and soil care.
• Promptly removing and destroying infested or dead wood.
• Using pheromone traps for early detection of beetle activity.
• Applying targeted insecticide sprays only during the short window when adults are actively searching for new host trees.
