Description

Systematic position. The yellow-winged wheat beetle (Anisoplia flavipennis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is a significant agricultural pest that primarily targets cereal crops throughout the temperate zones of Eurasia during the grain filling stage.

Host plants and damage. The beetle causes severe damage to wheat, rye, barley, and oat crops. The adult insects feed on the ears of cereals, consuming the soft, milky-waxy kernels. This feeding behavior often leads to stunted grains, empty husks, and reduced overall crop quality, which can significantly lower market value.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Anisoplia flavipennis lasts two years. Larvae develop within the soil, feeding on roots and organic matter. After overwintering as larvae, they pupate in the soil during the spring. Adult beetles emerge in early summer, coinciding with the critical developmental phases of cereal crops.

Economic impact. When population densities are high, these beetles can cause devastating crop losses. Beyond direct physical destruction of the kernels, the beetles compromise the plant's structural integrity, causing ears to break.
