The wheat beetle (Anisoplia segetum) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in the cereal-growing regions of Europe and Asia, where it can cause extensive damage to ripening crops.

This pest primarily attacks small grain cereals, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The adult beetles are highly attracted to the generative organs of these plants, specifically targeting the ears during the milk and dough development stages, which are critical for yield accumulation.

The life cycle of the wheat beetle spans two years. The larvae reside and feed within the soil, typically spending two winters underground before completing their development. The adult stage occurs in early summer, characterized by a rapid emergence of beetles that migrate to nearby cereal fields to feed and reproduce.

The damage caused by the adults is severe and direct. They chew on the developing grains, often leaving only the glumes of the ear intact, which is known as whitehead or partial grain loss. This activity not only reduces the overall grain yield but also significantly lowers the weight and quality of the harvested produce.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Preventive strategies, such as deep autumn plowing, disrupt the larval development by exposing them to extreme temperatures and predators. When infestation thresholds are exceeded, chemical control involving the application of insecticides during the mass flight period is necessary to mitigate yield losses.
