Wheat beetle

Taxonomic position. The wheat beetle (Anisoplia tritici) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of cereal crops, particularly in regions with steppe and forest-steppe climates, where it can drastically impact harvest yields.

Host crops and damage. This beetle targets cereals, including wheat, rye, barley, and occasionally maize or millet. Adult beetles consume the developing grain within the ear during the milky-wax stage. This behavior causes significant loss of grain mass, reduced quality of the final product, and increased grain shedding during the harvesting process.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the wheat beetle spans two years. Larvae develop in the soil, feeding on decaying organic matter and the roots of various grasses. Pupation occurs during the spring of the second year. Adult beetles emerge in early summer, coinciding with the grain filling phase of cereal crops, and spend approximately one month actively feeding and reproducing.

Harmfulness. The primary damage is caused by the adults (imago). During hot, sunny days, they fly and feed on the ears of wheat. If a high population density is reached, the beetles can cause substantial economic loss, destroying a large percentage of the crop in a very short period, often leaving behind empty or damaged ears.

Control measures. Effective management of the wheat beetle requires an integrated approach to reduce its population. The following strategies are essential:

• Timely and rapid harvesting of cereal crops to minimize the period of exposure to the beetles.
• Deep autumn plowing to expose larvae to natural predators and environmental stressors.
• The use of approved insecticides during the peak of adult activity if economic thresholds are exceeded.
• Maintaining proper crop rotation and practicing field sanitation to suppress larval development.
