June beetle

The June beetle (Anomala junii) is a member of the Scarabaeidae family, categorized under the order Coleoptera. It is a well-known pest that poses a recurring challenge for farmers and orchard owners, particularly due to the dual nature of the damage caused by both larvae and adult beetles during their respective development stages.

This beetle species impacts a wide variety of crops. Primary hosts include grapes, pome fruits like apple and pear, and stone fruits. Furthermore, in their larval stage, they are opportunistic feeders that occupy the soil, where they consume the root systems of various herbaceous plants, grasses, and young nursery stock, causing stunted growth.

The lifecycle of Anomala junii involves complete metamorphosis. Eggs are laid in the soil by females. Upon hatching, the larvae (grubs) spend most of their life underground, feeding on roots and organic matter. They undergo several molts before pupating in the soil. Adults emerge in early summer, often coinciding with the onset of the fruiting season for many host crops.

Damage caused by this pest is twofold. Adult beetles cause significant foliage loss by consuming leaf blades, leaving only the veins behind, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity. Larval damage is often hidden from view; as they feed on roots, they sever the plant's water and nutrient uptake, leading to wilting, yellowing, and potential mortality of the plants.

Effective management and protection strategies include a combination of cultural and chemical interventions:

• Deep plowing of orchards and fields to expose larvae to birds and drying out.
• Regular soil tilling during the larval development stage to disturb their growth cycle.
• Applying biological pesticides or targeted insecticides when adult emergence reaches threshold levels.
• Using light traps to capture and monitor population density during peak activity.
