Rugose chafer

The Rugose chafer (Anomala rugosa) is a member of the Scarabaeidae family, belonging to the order Coleoptera. Recognized as a significant agricultural pest in various regions, this beetle species is known for its ability to infest diverse plant hosts, impacting both ornamental landscapes and commercial fruit or vegetable production systems.

The pest primarily targets fruit trees, berry bushes, and grapevines. Both adults and larvae can cause economic damage. While adults are foliage feeders, often observed skeletonizing leaves during the growing season, the subterranean larvae feed on roots, which can be particularly damaging to young plants and nursery stock, hindering their establishment and overall growth rate.

The life cycle typically spans multiple stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females lay eggs in soil rich in organic matter. After hatching, the larvae reside in the soil profile, where they undergo several instars. This hidden phase makes the pest difficult to detect early, necessitating consistent monitoring during the spring and summer emergence of adults.

Damage symptoms usually appear as jagged leaf margins or complete leaf destruction, which impacts photosynthesis and weakens the plant. In extreme cases, high populations can cause total defoliation of host trees, leading to poor fruit development and an increased susceptibility to environmental stressors and secondary pathogenic infections.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the recommended approach for controlling Anomala rugosa. Essential strategies include regular soil cultivation to disturb larval habitats, the use of light traps to monitor and reduce adult population density, and targeted applications of insecticides during peak activity periods. Selecting products that minimize impact on beneficial insects is always a priority.
