Host plants and damage. The pest exhibits a polyphagous feeding habit, impacting a diverse range of crops such as sugarcane, various fruit trees, and ornamental shrubs. Adult beetles are primarily foliage feeders, causing defoliation, whereas the larvae, commonly known as white grubs, dwell within the soil and feed on root systems, causing severe plant physiological stress.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Anomala sulcatula follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults are nocturnal, showing high activity during the night and a strong attraction to artificial light sources. Females deposit eggs in soils rich in organic matter, where larvae develop by consuming decomposing plant material and living plant roots.
