The Twig wilter (Anoplocnemis curvipes) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Coreidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is widely recognized for its destructive impact on various tropical and subtropical crops, often causing severe economic losses for farmers in affected regions.
This insect is a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a diverse range of host plants. Major affected crops include grain legumes such as cowpea, pigeon pea, and beans, as well as tree crops like citrus, guava, cocoa, and coffee. It also frequently attacks cotton and other economically vital plants.
The biology of Anoplocnemis curvipes involves incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically lay eggs in rows on leaves or stems. The nymphs are mobile and pass through five instars before reaching adulthood, with the entire cycle taking several weeks depending on climate conditions.
The primary damage is caused by the piercing-sucking mouthparts of both nymphs and adults. By injecting toxic saliva into plant tissues while feeding, they cause the wilting of terminal shoots—hence the name "twig wilter." This feeding also leads to flower abortion, premature fruit drop, and deformed pods, severely impacting crop yield and quality.
Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key practices include regular field scouting to identify and manually remove egg masses, maintaining clean field edges to remove weeds that harbor the pest, and using targeted insecticide applications during the early nymphal stages when the insects are most vulnerable.
