Anoplocnemis luctuosa

Systematic position. Anoplocnemis luctuosa is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Coreidae family. These insects, commonly known as leaf-footed bugs, are recognized for their robust body structure and significant economic impact on agricultural production in their native range.

Host crops. This species is highly polyphagous but shows a strong preference for legumes, including soybeans, cowpeas, common beans, and chickpeas. The ability of the pest to migrate between different host plants allows it to sustain large populations throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal stages, and adult. Eggs are laid in clusters on leaves or stems. Nymphs closely resemble adults but lack wings and differ in coloration. The duration of the life cycle is strongly influenced by ambient temperature and relative humidity, which determine the number of generations per year.

Damage and severity. Feeding by both adults and nymphs causes severe physiological damage. They target succulent plant tissues, injecting toxins that lead to wilting, necrosis of shoots, and abortion of flower buds. Infested pods often fail to fill properly, leading to significant yield losses in both quantity and seed quality.

Control measures. Effective management of this pest requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy.
