Systematic position. Anoplognathus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. Commonly referred to as "Christmas beetles" in Australia, these insects are part of the diverse group of scarab beetles that play a dual role in ecosystems as both beneficial soil aerators and occasional destructive agricultural pests.

Host plants and damage. The primary hosts for adult Anoplognathus beetles are various species of the genus Eucalyptus. The beetles are voracious feeders that can cause complete defoliation of trees. While established forests can often withstand moderate attacks, young plantations and nursery seedlings are highly susceptible, often suffering severe growth stunting or mortality due to persistent leaf loss.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of an Anoplognathus beetle typically spans one to two years depending on environmental conditions. Females deposit eggs into moist, organic-rich soil. Upon hatching, the larvae reside underground, feeding on the roots of grasses and pasture plants. After reaching maturity through several larval instars, they pupate within the soil before emerging as adults during the warm summer months.

Nature of injury. Adult beetles exhibit gregarious behavior, often swarming in high numbers on host trees at night. They feed by consuming the leaf tissue entirely, often leaving nothing behind but the main vascular skeleton. This intense feeding pressure significantly reduces the photosynthetic area of the tree, rendering it vulnerable to secondary pests and environmental stress.

Protection measures. Managing Anoplognathus requires a strategy centered on monitoring and prevention:

• Selecting resistant Eucalyptus genotypes for commercial plantations.
• Applying contact insecticides to tree canopies during peak emergence periods.
• Managing pasture quality around forestry sites to reduce favorable egg-laying habitats.
• Utilizing light traps to monitor population density and time control applications effectively.
