This beetle is a polyphagous pest, meaning it attacks a wide variety of crops. It is particularly damaging to cereals, root vegetables like sugar beets and potatoes, as well as orchards and vineyards. The larvae (often referred to as white grubs) live below the soil surface, where they feed continuously on the roots, which often leads to total crop loss if the population density is high.

The biological cycle of Anoxia pilosa typically spans two to three years. Adult beetles emerge in the spring or early summer and feed on the foliage of trees and shrubs before laying eggs in the soil. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae progress through several instars, with their appetite and capacity for destruction increasing significantly during the second and third years of development.
