Anoxia villosa

Anoxia villosa is a beetle species belonging to the family Scarabaeidae. Often referred to as a root-feeding pest, it thrives primarily in sandy soils where it can easily navigate through the soil profile. The larvae, also known as white grubs, are the most destructive stage of this insect, causing significant economic impact on various crops.

The host range of Anoxia villosa is extensive. Its larvae feed on the roots of cereals, root crops, vegetables, and young nursery trees. While the adult beetles feed on foliage, their impact on plant health is secondary compared to the severe root damage inflicted by the larvae, which can result in the complete destruction of the plant's root system.

The life cycle is long, typically spanning 3 to 4 years. The biology is characterized by soil-dwelling stages where the larvae pass through several instars. They move deeper into the soil during cold winter months and migrate back to the root zone as temperatures rise. This makes predicting outbreaks difficult and requires a deep understanding of local soil conditions.

Damage symptoms usually include yellowing, stunted growth, and sudden wilting of the host plant. Because the larvae remain underground, infestation is often discovered too late when plants are already dying. In high-density areas, the larvae can consume roots so thoroughly that the entire plant can be pulled from the soil with no resistance.

Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM). Cultural practices such as autumn deep plowing are crucial to expose larvae to natural predators like birds. Chemical control involves the precise application of soil insecticides during sowing to create a protective zone around the roots. Regular monitoring of adult flights is also recommended to assess potential future population levels.
