Weevils (Anthonomus)

The genus Anthonomus represents a group of beetles belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These insects are significant agricultural pests, with the Apple Blossom Weevil (Anthonomus pomorum) being the most prominent species. They are characterized by their elongated rostrum, which serves as both a feeding tool and an instrument for oviposition.

These pests primarily target rosaceous plants, including apples, pears, strawberries, and raspberries. Their life cycle is tightly synchronized with the phenological development of their host plants. By targeting the reproductive structures of the plants, these weevils directly impact the potential fruit yield of the orchard or berry plantation.

The life cycle of Anthonomus involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults overwinter in sheltered locations, such as leaf litter, soil crevices, or rough tree bark. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge and migrate to the flower buds to feed and mate, ensuring the next generation is positioned for development within the buds.

The damage caused by the larvae is severe; they feed on the internal tissues of the flower buds, preventing them from opening. The result is the formation of a dry, brown bud that resembles a cap, which ultimately drops or remains hanging on the twig. Large infestations can result in the loss of a significant percentage of the blossom, directly correlating to lower fruit production.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural controls include maintaining orchard hygiene to reduce overwintering sites. Chemical control, when necessary, is most effective if applied during the early bud development stages (green tip) to eliminate adult weevils before they lay eggs. Monitoring population levels with traps or visual inspection is essential for timing these applications correctly.
