Boll weevil

Systematic position: The boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is widely recognized as one of the most destructive agricultural pests affecting cotton production worldwide, requiring constant vigilance and management.

Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the cotton plant (Gossypium species). The weevil has evolved a specific reliance on the squares (flower buds) and bolls of cotton, which provide both the nutritional requirements for adults and the necessary environment for larval development.

Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females puncture the cotton squares or bolls to deposit eggs. The larvae hatch and feed internally, effectively insulating themselves from many contact pesticides. The life cycle can be completed in approximately three weeks, enabling multiple generations per season.

Damage and economic impact: Adult weevils feed on squares and bolls, causing them to flare and eventually drop from the plant. Larval feeding destroys the lint and seeds inside the boll. This leads to severe yield losses, often resulting in complete crop failure if left unmanaged, posing a major threat to the economic stability of cotton farms.

Control measures: Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach:

• Planting early-maturing cotton varieties to escape the peak infestation period.
• Utilizing pheromone traps for early detection and population monitoring.
• Applying targeted insecticides based on established economic thresholds.
• Destroying crop residues immediately after harvest to eliminate overwintering sites.
• Maintaining strict quarantine protocols to prevent the spread of the insect to non-infested areas.
