Description

The strawberry blossom weevil (Anthonomus musculus) is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This beetle is highly specialized, causing substantial economic losses in strawberry and raspberry plantations globally by targeting the reproductive parts of the plants.

The primary host for this pest is the cultivated strawberry. During the early spring period, the beetles emerge from hibernation and start feeding on young leaves. As soon as the plants begin to produce buds, the weevils shift their feeding habits to the developing blossoms, which is the most critical stage for crop production.

The life cycle involves the adult female puncturing the bud to lay an egg inside. After oviposition, the female cuts the pedicel (flower stalk), which causes the bud to wilt and eventually fall to the ground. This behavior protects the developing larva inside the bud from predators and environmental factors until it pupates.

The damage caused by the weevil is direct and visually distinct. An infested field often shows numerous drooping or fallen buds, significantly reducing the berry yield.

  • Small round feeding punctures on leaves.
  • Severe yield depletion due to the loss of reproductive tissues.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this weevil. Cultural practices include the removal of crop debris and planting resistant varieties to break the pest's cycle. Chemical control is strictly recommended only before the flowering phase to prevent pesticide residue on berries and to minimize the impact on pollinators like bees.
