Description
Anthonomus nebulosus is a beetle species belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). As an agricultural pest, it primarily targets fruit trees, specifically apple, acting as a significant threat to orchard productivity during the critical stages of spring vegetative development.
The host range of this weevil mainly consists of pomaceous fruits. The damage is primarily caused by adults that feed on buds and larvae that develop within the reproductive tissues of the plant. This feeding behavior can cause localized necrosis of buds and premature fruit drop, significantly reducing the potential yield if left unmanaged.
The life cycle begins with the overwintering of adult beetles. They seek refuge in crevices of bark, leaf litter, or the soil surface near the tree trunk. As soon as temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge and migrate to the upper parts of the tree to feed on developing buds, which is a critical period for initial control.
Damage to the buds is often characterized by small puncture marks leading to tissue death and the failure of flowers to open properly. Larval infestation within buds and fruits causes the blossoms to wilt and fall, or it results in deformed fruit development, which is unsuitable for commercial market standards.
