Description

Systematic position. The apple blossom weevil (Anthonomus pedicularius, often synonymized with Anthonomus pomorum) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a highly specialized pest that targets apple orchards, representing a significant threat to global pomology, especially in regions with temperate climates.

Host plants. While the primary host is the apple tree, the beetle can also cause economic damage to pears, rowans, and hawthorns. The beetle’s life cycle is strictly synchronized with the phenology of the host plant, particularly during the critical early spring stages of bud burst and flowering.

Biology and life cycle. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as bark crevices, leaf litter, or the upper soil layers. In early spring, when temperatures rise above 6-8°C, they migrate to the tree canopy. Females bore into the developing buds and deposit eggs inside. The larvae develop within the bud, consuming internal reproductive organs before pupating in the remains of the flower.

Damage and harmfulness. The primary symptom of infestation is the development of brown, shriveled buds that fail to open, commonly known as "capped blossoms." This damage results in the total loss of the potential fruit. In years of high infestation, the pest can decimate the entire fruit crop, leading to severe economic losses for commercial growers.

Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

  • Mechanical removal of loose bark and clearing leaf litter during winter.
  • Installation of sticky or corrugated paper traps on tree trunks to intercept migrating adults.
  • Applying insecticides during the "green tip" to "pink bud" stages when beetles emerge.
  • Monitoring pest populations using visual counts before deciding on chemical intervention.

Success in managing this pest relies heavily on the timing of applications. Treatments must be concluded before the eggs are laid inside the buds, as the larvae are well-protected from most contact insecticides once inside the plant tissues.
