Description

Systematically, this species belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. As a specialized phytophage, it has co-evolved with Rosaceae crops, making it a recurring biological threat in apple orchards across its range of distribution.

The primary host for this pest is the apple tree. The beetles and their developing larvae cause physiological damage to the vegetative and reproductive buds, directly impacting the tree's ability to produce fruit and hindering overall growth performance during the spring season.

The life cycle involves the adult weevil overwintering in protected sites, such as bark crevices, leaf litter, or the upper soil profile. Upon the arrival of warmer spring temperatures, the adults emerge to feed on developing buds, subsequently depositing eggs into the tissue of the emerging flower buds.

The damage is characterized by the internal consumption of the bud tissue, causing the buds to wither and fail to bloom, often appearing as scorched or dried structures on the branches. Economic damage results from significant blossom loss, which drastically reduces total fruit set and compromises crop yield.
