Description
Systematic position. The Pine bud weevil (Anthonomus varians) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized insect pest that primarily inhabits coniferous forests, particularly targeting pines, and is recognized as a significant pest in both natural forests and nurseries across its range.
Host plants and damage. The primary host is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), although the species is also occasionally found on spruce. Adults cause minor damage by feeding on needles, but the larval stage is the most destructive. Larvae bore into the developing buds, consuming the inner tissues, which results in the death of the bud and the failure of new shoot growth.
Biology and life cycle. This species has a univoltine life cycle, meaning one generation per year. Adult weevils overwinter in the forest litter or crevices of the bark. In the spring, they emerge to feed on the buds of the host trees. Females oviposit directly into the buds, where the larvae hatch, develop through several instars, and subsequently pupate within the hollowed-out bud cavity.
Economic impact. The infestation leads to stunted growth, deformation of the tree crown (often causing a forked main stem), and a significant loss of vitality in young stands. Repeated damage reduces the timber quality and growth rate, making the trees more susceptible to secondary infestations by bark beetles and fungal pathogens.
Protection measures. Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management practices:
- Monitoring population levels during the spring emergence.
- Sanitary forest management to reduce overwintering sites.
- Application of selective insecticides at the stage of adult feeding, prior to oviposition.
- Utilizing pheromone-based monitoring tools to determine optimal intervention timing.
