Description
Systematic position. The Peruvian cotton weevil (Anthonomus vestitus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a major insect pest, specifically adapted to feed on the reproductive structures of cotton plants, causing significant challenges for agricultural production.
Host plants and damage symptoms. This pest primarily attacks the cotton plant (Gossypium spp.). The adults use their rostrum to puncture flower buds (squares) and developing bolls. This feeding behavior triggers the abscission of these organs, causing them to drop off before reaching maturity, which directly impacts yield.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs inside the plant tissue, protecting the larvae from external environmental factors. Larvae consume the internal contents of the buds or bolls. The rate of development is highly dependent on climate, with warmer temperatures accelerating generation turnover.
Economic impact. The infestation leads to severe yield losses. If left uncontrolled, the damage can jeopardize the profitability of cotton fields. Furthermore, the punctures serve as entry points for secondary infections and fungi, which can rot the fibers inside the bolls, making the cotton harvest unfit for commercial textile use.
Protection measures. Effective integrated pest management (IPM) is essential.
