Australian cane beetle

Systematic position. The Australian cane beetle (Antitrogus morbillosus) is classified within the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is a well-known soil-dwelling pest primarily recognized for its impact on commercial agriculture, particularly in sugarcane-producing regions where soil conditions are favorable for its larvae.

Host plants. The primary crop impacted by this pest is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). While the adult beetles are known to feed on the foliage of various woody plants, it is the root-feeding behavior of the larvae that causes the most significant economic loss to agricultural production systems.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in the soil near the roots of host plants. The larvae, commonly referred to as white grubs, spend a substantial period underground, growing through several instars while consuming organic matter and living roots before reaching the pupal stage.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. Larval feeding destroys the root system, which severely hinders the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients. This damage manifests as wilting, chlorosis, and lodging of the stalks. In severe infestations, Antitrogus morbillosus can cause extensive gaps in crop stands, significantly reducing total sugar yield.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Cultural practices, such as optimizing harvest times and deep tillage, can disrupt larval populations. Biological control agents, including entomopathogenic fungi, are used to manage soil populations. Additionally, chemical control involves applying systemic insecticides into the soil during the planting phase to provide long-lasting protection.
