Aonidia
Aonidia
Description
Aonidia is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae, commonly known as armored scale insects. These pests are highly specialized, leading a sedentary lifestyle protected by a dense, hardened wax cover that they form using their larval exuviae and glandular secretions, making them resistant to many environmental factors.
These scale insects primarily infest woody plants and shrubs, including various subtropical species like bay laurel, citrus, as well as several ornamental conifers and broadleaf plants. They typically congregate on the bark of branches, leaf surfaces, and fruits, often blending in with the plant tissue, which complicates early detection in horticultural settings.
The biology of Aonidia is influenced by local climate, as they thrive in stable temperatures. Adult females are immobile beneath their scale, producing eggs or live nymphs. The life cycle involves a crawler stage — the first instar larvae which are highly mobile; they disperse across the host plant or are carried by wind to new hosts before settling down to produce their permanent protective armor.
Damage caused by Aonidia results from the extraction of sap from the plant's vascular system. Prolonged infestation leads to chlorosis, premature leaf drop, dieback of shoots, and overall loss of plant vigor. Severe infestations can cause the disfigurement of young trees and increase susceptibility to secondary fungal pathogens due to the weakening of the host's defenses.
Management strategies for Aonidia involve a multi-faceted approach, including rigorous inspection of imported plant material and mechanical removal of heavily infested parts. During the crawler emergence period, systemic insecticides or horticultural oils can be used to disrupt the development of the scales by coating the plant and suffocating the insects. Maintaining good plant hygiene and proper pruning is essential to limit population spread.
