Laurel scale
Aonidia lauri
Description
The laurel scale (Aonidia lauri) is a specialized pest insect belonging to the family Diaspididae within the order Hemiptera. This species is specifically known for its affinity to laurel species, causing significant stress to plants in both greenhouse environments and outdoor ornamental settings.
The primary host for Aonidia lauri is the bay laurel (Laurus nobilis). These insects often cluster along the veins on the underside of leaves or on woody stems. Due to their morphological adaptation—a hardened, waxy protective cover—they remain concealed, often avoiding early detection by the grower until the infestation becomes quite advanced.
The life cycle of the laurel scale involves a sedentary adult phase, where the female remains immobile under her shield. Reproduction occurs within these protected structures, and the offspring emerge as mobile "crawlers." These crawlers are the only life stage capable of active dispersal, moving across the plant surface to find new feeding sites before settling down to secrete their own protective shields.
Damage caused by this pest is primarily physiological. By inserting their stylets into plant tissue, they sap essential nutrients, leading to yellowing (chlorosis), leaf drop, and stunted growth. If left untreated, the cumulative damage can weaken the plant's structural integrity and make it susceptible to secondary environmental stresses.
Control strategies for the laurel scale include:
- Regular inspection of leaf undersides and stems to detect early infestation.
- Pruning and removing severely infested branches to reduce the insect population.
- Applying horticultural oils, which can suffocate the insects beneath their shields.
- Using systemic insecticides precisely during the crawler emergence phase.
- Maintaining optimal plant health to ensure the laurel can better withstand insect pressure.
