California red scale

California red scale (Aonidiella aurantii) is a member of the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as one of the most destructive agricultural pests affecting citrus production globally, causing significant losses in yield and fruit marketability.

The pest primarily infests citrus species, including oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. It is a highly polyphagous insect that can also inhabit various ornamental plants, grapevines, and other broadleaf evergreens, allowing it to survive in diverse environmental conditions.

The biology of Aonidiella aurantii is characterized by viviparous reproduction. The crawlers, which are the first nymphal stage, are the only mobile phase of the pest. Once they settle on a host tissue, they secrete a waxy scale covering that protects them throughout their life cycle. Multiple overlapping generations occur annually in warmer climates.

Damage occurs when the insect inserts its mouthparts into the plant tissue to suck sap. This feeding process results in leaf chlorosis, twig dieback, and reduced tree vigor. On citrus fruit, the presence of these scales creates aesthetic blemishes, often leading to downgrading or rejection of the fruit for export markets.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. This involves the use of parasitic wasps for biological control, careful monitoring of crawler activity to time insecticide applications, and maintaining optimal orchard hygiene to prevent rapid spread. Preventing the introduction of infested nursery stock remains a critical priority.
