Yellow scale
Aonidiella citrina
Description
Yellow scale (Aonidiella citrina) is a significant sucking pest that belongs to the family Diaspididae within the order Hemiptera. As a major threat to commercial citrus production, this pest is strictly monitored under quarantine regulations in many agricultural regions worldwide due to its ability to cause severe economic losses.
The primary hosts of this insect are citrus species, specifically lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. However, it is polyphagous and can be found on a variety of ornamental plants, including camellias, gardenias, and various indoor palms, which often act as reservoirs for re-infestation in agricultural zones.
The biology of Aonidiella citrina is characterized by the protective waxy covering produced by the female. Development proceeds through egg, crawler, nymphal, and adult stages. The crawlers represent the mobile stage of the life cycle, capable of active dispersal or passive movement via wind or nursery stock, allowing the infestation to spread rapidly across orchards.
The damage caused by yellow scale is primarily due to the extraction of cell sap, which leads to chlorosis, leaf drop, and twig dieback. When fruits are infested, they develop visible yellow spots around the feeding sites, which significantly decreases their market value and can even cause the fruits to be rejected during the sorting process.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for yellow scale include:
- Strict quarantine measures to prevent the introduction of infested nursery stock.
- Regular orchard monitoring using pheromone traps and visual inspections to detect early outbreaks.
- Application of horticultural oils or systemic insecticides specifically during the crawler emergence phase.
- Biological control through the release of parasitoid wasps, such as Aphytis melinus.
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant parts to reduce the localized population density.
