Compere scale

The Compere scale (Aonidiella comperei) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. As a specialized scale insect, it poses a major threat to global citrus production and is strictly regulated in many regions due to its potential for rapid spread and crop destruction.

This pest primarily infests citrus species, including oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. It is commonly found on the leaves, twigs, and fruit skins of host plants. By inserting its stylets into the plant tissue, the insect extracts vital sap, which negatively impacts the overall health and vigor of the tree.

The lifecycle consists of several stages: egg, active crawler (nymph), sessile nymph, and adult female protected by a hard, waxy scale. The crawler stage is the primary mechanism for dispersal within the orchard, often aided by wind or farm machinery. Once a suitable feeding site is found, the scale settles and develops into its permanent form.

The damage caused by Aonidiella comperei is characterized by severe chlorosis, necrotic spots, and stunting of foliage. Heavy infestations lead to fruit discoloration and pitting, significantly lowering the commercial quality of the produce. In extreme cases, severe infestations can lead to limb dieback or even the death of the tree.
