The genus Aphodius is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. Often referred to as small dung beetles, these insects are usually beneficial due to their role in breaking down organic matter. However, some species occasionally act as pests, with larvae feeding on plant roots when their preferred organic food sources are scarce in the soil.

These pests primarily target cereal crops, seedlings, and root vegetables. The presence of Aphodius is often correlated with the application of fresh manure or high levels of organic matter in the topsoil, which serves as an attractant for adults during the mating and egg-laying season.

The lifecycle includes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The white, C-shaped larvae live underground and are responsible for the damage. The duration of each stage is highly dependent on environmental factors such as soil temperature and moisture, with rapid development occurring in warm, moist spring conditions.

The economic damage caused by Aphodius is typically localized but can be severe. Larvae feed on the fine root hairs and young roots of plants, causing stunted growth, wilting, and even plant mortality in dense infestations. The physical damage to roots also creates open wounds that provide entry points for soil-borne pathogens, potentially leading to root rot diseases.

Key preventive measures include thorough soil cultivation to disrupt larval habitats and the use of well-composted manure instead of fresh material.
