Description

Systematic position. The black dung beetle (Aphodius ater) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. It is a widespread insect often found in pastures and fields, where its larvae typically utilize manure as a food source, although they may occasionally damage surrounding plant roots.

Biology and life cycle. The adult beetle is small, generally measuring between 4 to 6 mm in length, with a shiny black appearance. The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Development is highly dependent on the availability of organic waste and soil moisture, as larvae spend a significant portion of their life in the upper soil layers.

Crops and damage. While primarily saprophagous, in agricultural settings, Aphodius ater can affect pasture grasses. Larvae feed on the roots of grasses when their preferred food source is scarce or when populations are abnormally high. This causes the grass to yellow, weaken, and eventually die, leading to patches in the pasture.

Pest impact. The damage is most visible in livestock grazing areas. Extensive larval feeding undermines the structural integrity of the sod, making it difficult for the pasture to recover from grazing pressure. This leads to a decrease in overall biomass production and the potential encroachment of undesirable weed species.

Protection measures. Management of the black dung beetle focuses on sanitation and cultural practices:

  • Mechanical harrowing of fields to break up dung piles and expose larvae to predators and desiccation.
  • Balanced soil fertilization to promote vigorous root growth in pasture grasses.
  • Rotational grazing strategies to manage manure accumulation and prevent excessive buildup of breeding sites.
