Aphodius contaminatus

Systematic position: Aphodius contaminatus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. It is a member of the Aphodiinae subfamily, commonly known as dung beetles. While they primarily perform an ecological role by recycling organic matter, their presence in high densities within agricultural landscapes can negatively affect soil health and plant growth.

Biology and life cycle: This species is distinct due to its peak activity in the autumn. Females deposit eggs in or under livestock dung pats. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the soil, where they feed on decomposing organic matter. Depending on environmental conditions, they may overwinter as larvae or adults, eventually emerging to complete their life cycle in the following season.

Damage and pest status: The primary damage occurs when larvae disrupt the root zones of pasture grasses. By tunneling through the soil and feeding near the rhizosphere, they cause the death of grass plants, resulting in bare patches in the fields. This damage limits the availability of forage and can facilitate the invasion of weed species into damaged areas.

Affected crops: The pest primarily targets pasture grasses and perennial forage crops. Concentrated livestock grazing provides ideal breeding grounds for Aphodius contaminatus. Consequently, pastures with poor management or high animal density are at the highest risk of experiencing significant structural damage to the turf and soil integrity.

Control measures: Integrated management is the most effective approach to mitigate the impact of this beetle:

• Frequent harrowing of pastures to break up and dry out dung pats, effectively killing larvae.
• Rotational grazing systems to prevent local population explosions.
• Maintaining healthy soil structure through regular reseeding and fertilization.
• Monitoring the emergence of adults during the autumn to assess potential larval density for the following season.
