Aphodius erraticus is a species of dung beetle belonging to the family Scarabaeidae. While these insects are traditionally viewed as beneficial decomposers, certain populations can reach densities that negatively impact pasture ecosystems. These beetles primarily target areas rich in livestock manure, which are common in grazing lands. While they do not directly feed on crop foliage, they can cause indirect damage to forage crops such as perennial grasses and clovers. The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in or beneath dung pats, which serve as the primary nutritional source for the developing larvae. The larvae move through the soil-manure interface, consuming organic matter. In favorable conditions, the species exhibits multiple generations per year.
The economic harm is characterized by the physical disturbance of the soil surface. When larvae occur in high densities, they undermine the root systems of grasses, causing the pasture sward to become sparse and less productive. This disturbance also increases the susceptibility of forage plants to drought and reduces the overall yield of the pasture.
