Description

The dung beetle (Aphodius fimetarius) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. While primarily known as a beneficial insect that aids in organic matter decomposition, it can occasionally act as a pest in agricultural settings when its population spikes or natural food sources are scarce.

This beetle is commonly found in pastures, grasslands, and areas surrounding livestock farms. The primary diet of the larvae consists of dung; however, when dung is insufficient, larvae may feed on the roots of young seedlings, grasses, and vegetables, particularly in fields where heavy organic fertilization has occurred.

The life cycle follows complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs directly into dung piles or organic-rich soil. The larvae develop within this substrate, playing a role in mineralizing organic matter, while adults typically overwinter in the soil or beneath surface litter until conditions become favorable in spring.

Damage caused by this pest involves the pruning of root systems and the consumption of young plant tissues. This behavior often leads to stunted growth, wilting, and in severe cases, plant death. Seedlings and young crops are most susceptible to damage, especially in fields with high organic matter concentration and high beetle density.

Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest control. Key methods include:

  • Deep plowing to disturb overwintering sites;
  • Applying only fully decomposed manure to fields;
  • Regular monitoring of soil quality and insect populations;
  • Use of appropriate insecticides if threshold levels of infestation are exceeded.
