Aphodius hewitti is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. Often associated with dung decomposition, these beetles play a dual role in ecosystems, though they can become problematic in livestock farming areas where their population density interferes with forage growth.

These insects primarily feed on animal manure; however, their larvae may cause damage to the root systems of grasses and cereal crops. This happens when larvae reside in the soil profile and consume organic matter, incidentally disrupting the rhizosphere and the stability of the plant root network.

The life cycle of the beetle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs within organic matter or moist, nutrient-rich soil. The larval stage is the most critical in terms of environmental impact, as they grow and feed within the upper layers of the soil.

Key strategies include mechanical disruption of breeding sites such as pasture harrowing to spread dung, proper grazing rotation to manage organic accumulation, and monitoring soil conditions. Chemical treatments are typically reserved for severe outbreaks, emphasizing the preference for long-term cultural control methods.
