Description

Aphodius lividus is a species of scarab beetle (Scarabaeidae) belonging to the order Coleoptera. While typically known as dung beetles, the larvae of this species can sometimes become agricultural pests when they inhabit soils with high organic content or areas recently treated with manure.

The biological cycle of Aphodius lividus consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults are strong fliers and are attracted to organic debris and moist soil. They lay eggs directly into the substrate, where the developing larvae consume whatever organic material is available, including root systems of living plants.

Crops most susceptible to damage include various cereals such as wheat, barley, and maize, as well as several vegetable crops. When organic matter is scarce, the larvae switch to feeding on the succulent roots of seedlings, causing significant stress to the young plants during their vulnerable initial growth stages.
