The Tasmanian pasture cockchafer (Aphodius tasmaniae) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. Although it is a member of the dung beetle group, its larvae are significant agricultural pests that feed primarily on the root systems of living grasses rather than decaying organic matter.
This pest is particularly destructive to pastures, turf, and cereal crops. The larvae live in soil tunnels and chew through the roots of established plants. Heavy infestations can result in the complete loss of pasture cover, which negatively impacts livestock production and necessitates costly re-seeding of damaged fields.
