Description
The willow spittlebug (Aphrophora salicina) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphrophoridae. This sap-sucking insect is widely recognized as a significant pest of willow trees and various other deciduous species, causing aesthetic and physiological damage to forest stands and ornamental plantings across Eurasia.
The host range of the willow spittlebug primarily includes species of the genus Salix, although populations can also thrive on poplars (Populus) and alders (Alnus). By inserting their mouthparts into the phloem, both nymphs and adults extract vital sap, which negatively impacts the tree's overall nutrient distribution and metabolic health.
The life cycle involves a single generation per year, with the species overwintering in the egg stage embedded within the bark of host plants. Upon hatching in the spring, nymphs begin to secrete a characteristic frothy, saliva-like substance. This foam serves as a protective barrier, keeping the nymphs moist and shielding them from predators and environmental fluctuations.
Damage caused by the spittlebug manifests as stunted growth, distortion of tender young shoots, and foliage discoloration. In heavy infestations, the constant loss of sap leads to premature leaf drop and increased susceptibility to fungal pathogens, which can severely weaken the tree's health and reduce its annual wood increment.
Effective management requires a combination of strategies tailored to the infestation level. Cultural practices, such as pruning heavily infested shoots and maintaining tree health through appropriate irrigation, are fundamental. When necessary, the targeted application of systemic or contact insecticides during the early nymphal stage can significantly reduce populations and prevent widespread damage to the plantation.
